An example of metamorphosis by Banksy
An example of metamorphosis by Banksy
OUR ANALYSIS:
This document is a photomontage made by Banksy in 1994. It is entitled “Napalm” in reference to a photograph by Phan Thi Kim Thuc.
On this picture we can see a girl who looks terrified, in the middle of Mickey Mouse and Ronald Mc Donald. There is a sharp contrast between her and the two characters: while she is crying, they are smiling. We notice that the background is grey and everything is in black and white except the clothes of Mickey and Mc Donald which are yellow. The three characters are walking. They seem to be parading. Indeed, Ronald is waving “hello” to an imaginary crowd. But the naked girl in the middle seems to have been dragged here by force.
According to us, this work denounces the American society, its capitalist system, its consumer society, and mostly its foreign policy, particularly during the Vietnam war. Banksy maybe wants to show that the USA killed people, and they did not only kill officers, they also killed innocent civilians. They want to appear as saviors but their hands are not clean.
To conclude, we like this artwork because it's a parody of another photograph and it's an interesting denunciation of the Vietnam war. The contrast between the fictitious characters and the girl is very striking. It's very bold to have done such a work.
